The Electoral Court in Bloemfontein has ordered that the Independent Electoral Commission accept the National People's Party's candidate list for the local government elections, the party's lawyer Brian Lutzno said on Tuesday.
The IEC refused to accept the party’s candidates list for the Cape Town Metro because its leader Badih Chaaban had missed the 5pm deadline on March 25.
The Cape Times reported that Chaaban said that when he arrived at the IEC’s offices in Bellville to submit candidate documentation he was told he was too late.
“I am very, very upset. Tomorrow I will be speaking to my legal team. We are going to court.”
Chaaban said he had entered the IEC building before the 5pm cut-off.
IEC spokesperson Kate Bapela said the IEC was not aware of the order on Tuesday evening.
“I don't know, I'm not sure... if there is a case due course will take place,” she said.
