Thirteen people were injured when a taxi and car collided near Johannesburg's central business district on Tuesday, the city's emergency services said.

Spokesperson Percy Morokane said three people were in a critical condition and had to be airlifted to hospital. Another four were seriously injured while another six sustained minor wounds.

The incident took place on the N17 freeway, a few kilometres from the city after 8am.

The taxi had been coming from the East Rand, Morokane said. - Sapa
